Liberal Democrats are fighting the education funding cuts. This is to ensure your child’s right to the best possible education.
- Invest more in our schools
- More support for preschool children
- Increase funding to meet the needs of Special Education Needs pupils
Our schools are critically underfunded and children's education is suffering as a result. The Conservative's funding cuts mean that schools are struggling to afford basic supplies and teachers are being put under impossible pressure.
The Government claims that schools are getting more money than they have ever had. It forgets to mention that there are more children than ever going through the education system. Additionally, far more children with significant special needs are now educated in mainstream schools. As a result, the present County Council has run up a debt of almost £12 million due to the shortfall, but have you heard them complain about this to the Government?
These cuts are affecting all schools: primary, secondary, those under council control, academies and free schools alike.
With the funding cuts, schools are forced to narrow the curriculum in order to save money. The Liberal Democrats want to shift the focus away from high-stakes exams and towards a broad and balanced curriculum, which equips every young person with the skills they need to get on in life.
It is vital that all children have the best possible start in life. We will build up the support of families with pre-school children who are in need of help and guidance including working with family centres and pre-schools.
The Conservative-run County Council have tried to make a £1 million cut in the transport budget used to help ‘Special Educational Needs and Disability’ (SEND) students get to school. We will not punish the most vulnerable children and families in this way.
The funding for schools currently disadvantages those schools with the more SEND students, but we are pressing for a fairer funding system.
