ID CARDS FAIL

10.47.03am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 19th Apr 2005

Graham Oakes (Lib Dem Candidate, South Dorset) has reacted to the news that the Cornish trial of the proposed ID cars has failed.

"I had a major doubt about the governments ability to successfully introduce ID Cards, based on the poor performance of previous computer-based projects. The failure of the pilot scheme in Cornwall reinforces my view. As there is no evidence that compulsory ID Cards would reduce crime or protect us from terrorists, spending billions of pounds on a scheme that may fail is sheer folly. We should spend the money recruiting 10,000 extra police officers."
